Chartered Management Program (CMP)
The Chartered Management Program (CMP) outlines the knowledge requirements that professional managers need to qualify for either the Certified in Management (C.I.M.) or the Chartered Manager (C.Mgr.) professional designation.
The CMP is an eight-course (300 - 320 hour) program of studies covering the following core elements of management and business administration.
CMP Mandatory Courses
Each of these four courses are required to complete the Chartered Management Program (CMP).
Business Administration and Management
This course is formerly known as Introduction to Management. Through this course, students will:
- Learn to identify key business structures and processes, including the production of goods and services.
- Acquire basic knowledge of supply chain management, information and accounting systems.
- Learn to anticipate and respond to marketing, economic and financial issues.
- Learn to identify human resource issues as they relate to management.
Managerial Communications
This course covers writing and communication skills for managers. In this course, students will learn to be able to:
- Understand the writing process and how to plan, draft, edit and format business communications.
- Apply good writing principles to all business communications including narrative and corporate storytelling techniques.
- Influence others in written and verbal communications.
- Isolate problems and desired outcomes.
- Build strong and well-supported arguments.
- Isolate problems and desired outcomes.
- Negotiate strategically to achieve goals.
Financial Management
This course focuses on principles and application of finance in order to teach students how to use money effectively in business. In this course, students will:
- Gain an understanding of the financial planning process.
- Become familiar with financial ratio analysis, budgeting and forecasting.
- Gain an understanding of short-term and long-term financing.
- Learn the cost and risk factors of capital budgeting.
Business Strategy
Formerly known as Strategic Analysis, this course focuses on how to develop and implement business strategies. This course will teach students how to:
- Organize, develop and apply a professional business strategy and plan.
- Understand corporate and functional theories of strategy including development and implementation.
- Employ skills and approaches that are essential to policy development and implementation.
- Identify how societal values and trends affect strategic policy.
CMP Optional Courses
These courses allow students to focus on specific areas of management that they are interested in, passionate about, or think they need more development in to become a more effective manager. In order to complete the Chartered Management Program (CMP), students are required to complete 4 of the following courses.
Canadian Business Law
This course covers the application of Canadian law to business. It covers the roots of business law and related cases to give managers a better understanding of how Canadian law impacts business. In this course, students will:
- Develop an understanding of the source and basis of Canadian law and how to interpret statutes and case law.
- Learn to identify legal issues that arise in daily business life.
- Learn to communicate about legal issues and assess the likely outcome.
- Learn basic legal terms that are used in daily business.
- Learn to describe the basic elements of torts, contracts and other common business concerns.
Managerial Accounting
Managers need to understand the fundamentals of accounting to make more informed business decisions. This course covers those key concepts. Through this course, students will learn how to:
- Identify, classify, and allocate costs and expenses.
- Prepare budgets that include possible variances.
- Determine internal transfer prices and evaluate capital expenditures.
- Support better decision making across all areas of an organization.
Financial Accounting
Financial accounting covers how to properly track and report financial data that surrounds a wide range of business scenarios. In this course, students will learn to:
- Understand Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This includes their concepts, assumptions and guidelines, as well as recording and interpretation of financial statements.
- Use analytical tools such as financial ratio analysis, and interpret financial information.
- Understand accounting for long-term investments.
- Be more familiar with business combinations and structures.
- Be more aware of accounting standards and global currency forces.
Organizational Behaviour
This covers how practices, structures and other factors influence human behaviour in organizations. In this course, students will learn:
- How organizational reality is changing in today’s world.
- The impact of human behaviour and how it impacts managing people effectively.
- How to be at ease with a variety of management-level communication strategies.
- How to apply contemporary organizational theory to build a positive and proactive work environment.
Human Resource Management
Effective management of human resources is critical to business success. This course covers the key concepts of human resource management. Students in this course will learn how to:
- Estimate an organization’s human resource needs and supply.
- Analyze staffing needs and design recruitment solutions.
- Explore the effects of legislation related to human rights, diversity, equity, and health and safety.
- Identify effective performance management, incentive and compensation systems.
- Build cooperation between unions and management and create a framework for resolving disputes between them.
Managerial Marketing
This course provides an overview of how and why marketing works for businesses. It teaches valuable marketing skills that are valued in any organization. Students in this course will learn:
- The importance and evolution of marketing in today’s global environment.
- The marketing process, concepts and marketing mix.
- How to apply the marketing process to practical problems and situations.
- How to develop and implement an effective marketing plan.
- How to allocate limited marketing resources in a strategic way.
Economics
Managers who understand the concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics are able to bring valuable insight into their decision-making process. In this course, students will learn how to:
- Identify and understand key economic concepts.
- Understand how supply and demand establish market prices and output levels.
- Analyze the basic characteristics of market structures such as pure competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition and oligopoly.
- Calculate an organization’s output and profit under varying market structures.
- Compare the business cycle, unemployment, inflation, and long-term growth.
- Identify the importance of international trade and globalization to the Canadian economy.
- Evaluate the operation and limitations of fiscal policy and the impact of federal budgets on the Canadian economy.
- Identify the primary functions of the Bank of Canada and the goals and tools of its monetary policy.
Project Management
Project management involves strategically managing all of the moving parts of a project to deliver value to stakeholders. In this course, students will learn how to:
- Design a project charter that includes all of the necessary elements.
- Create a project plan that includes the scope and work breakdown structure.
- Develop a schedule based on the project plan.
- Estimate all costs and develop a cost baseline for the project.
Operations Management
This course covers a range of topics that factor in to effective management of the day-to-day operations of a business. In this course, students will learn:
- About operations and supply chain management and how it has developed over time.
- How to list the parameters of a sustainable supply chain strategy.
- How to identify the features of Total Quality Management, Six Sigma, and lean supply chains.
- The tools and techniques used in forecasting, capacity management, logistics and facilities layouts.
