(Olds, Alberta, November 17, 2011) —

The Canadian Institute of Management (CIM) and Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada) have partnered to pre-qualify CGAs for the CIM’s Professional Manager (P.Mgr.) designation.
Under the agreement, CGAs in good standing, registered with one of the provincial CGA associations, and meeting all of the CIM prerequisites are qualified to obtain the P.Mgr. designation, and thereafter use the title of Professional Manager.
“We are delighted to accept applications from CGAs for the CIM’s P.Mgr. designation,” said Paul Markle, CIM National President. “We recognize that many CGAs are involved in management, and after a thorough assessment of the high academic and professional standards required for CGA certification, we are satisfied that there are skills and experience for an individual with a CGA designation to qualify for the P.Mgr. designation.”
The title of Professional Manager and the P.Mgr. designation clearly identify individuals who meet an established set of criteria reflecting high standards of professional integrity, ethics, work performance, and recognition. It denotes an academic and practical Canadian experience background which provides confidence in the holder’s management skills.
CGAs wishing to obtain the P. Mgr designation need to comply with the standard application process and requirements outlined on the CIM website, including providing references and proof of managerial experience, however, they do not need to obtain transcripts from their academic institution.

The Path to P.Mgr. for CGAs

Recognizing that many CGAs are involved in management, the Canadian Institute of Management has assessed the formation process, both academic and professional, taking into consideration former and current requirements, and has developed the following professional development pathway for CGAs to obtain a designation from the CIM:

A Certified General Accountant (CGA) in good standing, registered with one of the Provincial CGA Associations, holding 5 years of managerial experience, is qualified to apply for the designation of Professional Manager (P.Mgr.).

All applicants for a P.Mgr. designation will need to complete and qualify in accordance with the standard application process as outlined on the CIM website with the exception of transcripts being sent from their academic institution.  Proof of academic qualification can be achieved by a sending copy of a current CGA registration card to the CIM National Office, which will be verified by the CIM with the respective Provincial CGA Association.
